Reclassification in Academic Research Libraries: Is It Still Relevant in an E-Book World?

This article examines whether academic libraries are still reclassifying materials, how they are doing so, and if the acquisition of electronic materials has an impact on reclassification efforts. An online survey was sent to the heads of cataloging units at libraries belonging to the Association of Research Libraries to answer these questions. Almost one-third of libraries are currently involved in reclassification projects. Most respondents reported they do not believe that purchasing e-books has affected their decisions about reclassification. The article also examines the faceted search capability of next-generation catalogs and their possible impact on patrons’ use of classification.     

Nice vs. Necessary: Reference Collections in ARL Member Libraries

This study assesses the reference collection management practices and strategies used in the reference departments of academic members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Librarians who participate in the management of the humanities and social science reference collections within ARL member libraries responded to an online survey about collection development policies, acquisition processes, collection use, weeding, and marketing of their reference collections. The results of this survey suggest that a large percentage of academic ARL member libraries are weeding their collections regularly, measuring use of the print and electronic reference collection, and moving decidedly toward electronic reference materials.     

Beyond the fringe: Administratively decentralized collections at the University of Michigan

Little is known about the materials that university departments purchase for their own use. This study examines materials purchased for other departments at the University of Michigan, whether these materials were also held in the University of Michigan Libraries' collections, and the subjects of the materials purchased. Titles purchased for departmental collections were searched in the libraries' online public catalog to determine whether they were held by the University Libraries, and if so, their subject. The majority of titles purchased for departmental libraries were held in the University Libraries collection. As a whole, the purchases were concentrated in science, technical, and medical fields; moreover, titles in these fields were more likely than others to be duplicated in the University Libraries. This study provides initial insight into the relation of independent departmental collections and raises many questions about the relation of such collections to central university libraries.     

澳大利亚国家图书馆展览政策研究

[目的/意义]国内图书馆对展览政策的研究较少，而国外图书馆在相关领域有比较成熟的做法。研究国外图书馆展览政策有助于促进国内图书馆展览工作的开展。[方法/过程]通过对澳大利亚国家图书馆展览政策与展品租借政策文本的梳理与研究，探索其有益做法对我国图书馆的启示。[结果/结论]我国图书馆应从4方面完善展览工作：①重视展览工作的组织建设；②重视对展览原则的研究；③结合国家文物保护政策制定展品借出政策；④结合我国实际制定展品借入政策。     

Revisiting an Abandoned Practice: The Death and Resurrection of Collection Development Policies

Academic libraries have a long tradition of endorsing and creating written collection development policies to communicate, both internally and externally, their dynamic collection practices. As revealed by a literature search, academic libraries, over time, appear to have abandoned this practice. This article documents how Texas A&M University Libraries embraced the ambitious task of resurrecting written collection development policies and, as part of this process, assessed the current state of collection development, systematically planned for future collection growth, and identified emerging fields of research requiring additional collection support. This process also undertook the integration of collection development into the organizational culture of the libraries. Reflecting on this process, the authors present the case for creating and maintaining written collection development policies in academic libraries.

《中文图书分类法》(2007年版)是一部在台港澳广泛使用的大型图书馆分类法。论文主要介绍了《中文图书分类法》通用复分表的双语、双表、实用等特色,并将其与《中国图书馆分类法》进行了对比分析,既有助于对台港澳图书分类法的了解,也可为图书文献分类法的修订提供有益的借鉴。     

Bringing public services experience to technical services: Improvements in practice

Service to our users is the principal basis for a library's existence and as users' expectations increase, libraries must continually change their organization's policies, procedures and workflows to meet these expectations. In order to achieve this in the Acquisitions Monographs Unit at Texas A&M University (TAMU) Libraries, Library Administration utilized a public service librarian who has a strong user oriented background to provide a fresh look at established procedures. This librarian examined TAMU Libraries Acquisition Monographic policies, procedures and workflows from a user perspective and found some of them to be out of date. Then the librarian researched other businesses and libraries best practices which she then adopted and modified to fit the needs of her unit. These “New Best Practices” could be transferable to any library facing similar organizational needs.

论文通过对美国专业图书馆协会发展历史、政策文件及开展活动等多方面情况的介绍,阐述该协会在培养馆员、完善职业生涯规划、扩大专业图书馆影响、促进政策与标准的制定等方面所发挥的重要作用,据此对我国专业图书馆事业的发展提出若干建议。     

Preserving digital scholarship: the future is now

The Cedars project in the UK has been set up to explore some of the issues associated with archiving of digital materials and to make recommendations to libraries about preserving digital materials. Cedars, which is led by the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL), is funded as part of the Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib) by the Joint Information Systems Committee of the Higher Education Funding Councils.     

Music Collections in ARL Libraries

This article reports the findings of a survey conducted in 1986 of music collections in academic libraries of the Association of Research Libraries. There were five sections in the survey instrument: (1) General Information; (2) Staffing and Location of the Music Collection; (3) Collection Development Policies and Procedures; (4) Collection Evaluation Policies and Procedures; and (5) Tables. These sections correspond to the major questions which initiated the survey: (I) Where did Louisiana State University (LSU) rank in music holdings and budget among the respondents? (2) In relation to collection size and budget how did LSU compare in staffing, and where did the majority of other ARL libraries house their material? (3) How many libraries had collection development policies as guidelines for developing their collections? (4) How many libraries had formal collection evaluation procedures, and what bibliographic sources were used for this (5) How did other institutions view the provision of chamber music "performance parts" and "elementary/secondary classroom materials" in a research collection, and what were the collection preferences for certain book, non-book, and score materials?     

音像资料联合编目规则探讨

通过比较研究地方版文献联合采编协作网(CRLNet)几个有代表性成员馆的音像资料编目数据发现,目前国内图书馆的音像资料编目存在各自为政、编目数据大相径庭的现象,其主要原因是没有统一的编目规则。为统一CRLNet音像资料的著录规则,深圳图书馆征求各成员馆的意见并结合音像资料工作实践提出,音像资料的著录可以参见著录电子资源的某些字段,但是主体仍应该遵循录音、录像资料的编目规则。     

A Look at Circulation Statistics

ABSTRACT

Nearly all academic libraries keep circulation statistics which are often shared with their parent university, library consortia, and national organizations. This study attempted to discover what goes into circulation statistics by surveying Southeastern research libraries. Libraries were asked what they count in their circulation statistics and what their circulation policies are to identify differences across libraries. The results of the survey indicate that there is no set formula for counting circulation statistics.     

Accessibility Best Practices,Procedures, and Policies in Northwest United States Academic Libraries

Academic libraries are responsible for providing accessible copies of collection materials to individuals facing a variety of accessibility needs. Accessibility needs differ from user to user, often making each request an individualized service. However, do academic libraries have a responsibility to embrace a Universal Design for Learning approach to their acquisitions process? Do academic library workers need to establish policies as part of the procurement process? This research surveyed academic libraries at institutions similar to Boise State University in size, graduate program offerings, and within the same region to help answer the questions: how academic libraries in the Northwest United States establish practices, policies, procedures, and workflows to meet these needs, and: how do academic libraries currently meet these needs when providing streaming media services, and other collection materials, to users with accessibility needs?     

Forging Partnerships: Foundations of Geospatial Data Stewardship

Geospatial data stewardship fosters user-driven collection, management, access, reuse, and preservation of location-based data. Academic and research libraries are poised to be at the center of geospatial data stewardship, working with partners to develop a sustainable, geospatial data stewardship hub. This article argues for the essential role of libraries in leading collaborative partnerships to develop a user-driven, spatial data infrastructure that includes people, policies, standards, community perspectives, and operational workflows. The emerging model of partnership-based spatial data infrastructure described at the Washington University Libraries demonstrates working methods in practice.

2020年12月9日,国际图联(IFLA)发布的《数字技术政策中的图书馆:政策领域、机制、做法》(Libraries in Digital Skills Policies:Policy areas,mechanisms,practices)报告,回顾和总结了国际组织和各国政府在数字化与互联网政策、战略、相关项目框架中涉及图书馆帮助提高公民数字技能的内容,旨在为图书馆界宣传其在数字技能建设中的重要作用提供参考,并呼吁各国政府将图书馆作为数字技能基础设施的一部分而上升为国家战略。基于这一报告之启示,我国图书馆应提高危机意识,重视用户数字素养培训和教育;抓住政策契机,寻找服务突破口;发挥图书馆行业的引领作用,关注数字经济领域的宏观政策动向,为相关部门提供制定政策参考,使图书馆成为数字经济的重要参与者。     

英国大学图书馆网站个人信息保护政策文本分析及启示

[目的/意义] 针对目前我国个人信息保护规范和政策不断出台而大学图书馆相关政策极度缺失的状况,调查并分析英国10所著名大学图书馆网站个人信息保护政策,为我国大学图书馆今后发展个人信息保护政策提供可借鉴的经验。[方法/过程] 对英国10所著名大学的图书馆网站个人信息保护政策内容进行全面扫描,结合隐私保护准则以及隐私关注测量模型进行政策文本的分析,揭示这些政策文本在形式和主题方面的特点。[结果/结论] 英国大学图书馆个人信息保护政策主要包括隐私政策、Cookies政策和数据保护,颁布主体多为学校;内容主题通常包括保证类、个人信息生命周期管理类以及事务类,与OECD隐私保护准则以及隐私关注测量模型有较好吻合。这些对我国大学图书馆未来发展个人信息保护政策有很好的借鉴价值。     

Evaluating Usage and Impact of Networked Electronic Resources through Point-of-Use Surveys: A MINES for Libraries™ Study

This article presents a literature review of methods for evaluating serials, or networked electronic resources, usage, and focuses on point-of-use intercept Web surveys. In the context of the MINES for Libraries protocol administered by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and derived from the indirect cost study methodologies developed by Franklin and Plum, the article discusses a variety of point-of-use Web survey implementation methodologies used in libraries. It discusses sampling plan options and articulates issues related to the mandatory and optional versions of the point-of-use Web survey protocols with an emphasis on nonresponse bias. The article provides a set of methods that libraries can use to continue to evaluate their networked electronic services in innovative ways to better serve the research, teaching, and learning needs of their users.     

The shrinking national collection: A study of the effects of the diversion of funds from monographs to serials on the monograph collections of research libraries

A precipitous rise in the price of library materials, especially serials; an increase in worldwide publication output; and a decline in the funding base of research libraries have resulted in a drastic erosion of the purchasing power of research libraries. This erosion of purchasing power has in turn directly resulted in a reduction of the number of nonserial printed materials acquired by academic research libraries in the United States in the latter half of the 1980s. This study is a comparison of the number of nonserial imprints acquired by the 72 Association of Research Libraries members whose bibliographic records for the imprint years 1985 to 1989 are included in the 1991 edition of the OCLC/AMIGOS Collection Analysis CD-ROM database. The results of the study confirm that there was a decline in the holdings of the 72 libraries from 1985 to 1989 by language and subject groupings. This led to a greater concentration on a core of materials by the 72 libraries.

Collaborative Stewardship: Building a Shared,Central Collection of Print Legal Materials

Libraries are in an unprecedented period of change. The predominant publishing model is moving from print to digital. Libraries seek to strike the right balance between providing information that today's researcher needs just in time and preserving materials in print for tomorrow's researcher just in case. Legal resources present even greater challenges. This article will reflect how two organizations, the Legal Information Preservation Alliance (LIPA) and NELLCO, an international consortium of law libraries, are currently working together toward a collaborative solution.
