Cataloging of Curriculum Materials on OCLC

The availability and content of on-line bibliographic records for curriculum materials are evaluated in this study. Records were selected from the OCLC OnLine Union Catalog, the predominant on-line bibliographic network providing cataloging to all types of libraries including school libraries and others supporting curriculum material collections. Based on a sample of shelflist cards for curriculum materials from the Instructional Materials Laboratory collection of the University Libraries at California State University, Northridge, a quantitative assessment is made of the content of the matching OCLC records. Study results suggest that the availability and content of OCLC catalog records for curriculum materials may satisfy the bibliographic information and access requirements of curriculum materials collection librarians.     

Romanization in Cataloging of Korean Materials

ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes cataloging rules for Korean materials focusing on the McCune-Reischauer (MR)¹ system, the Korean romanization scheme currently used in the United States. This system has been used for a long time in many Western countries, and was officially adopted by the Library of Congress (LC) for use in the cataloging of Korean language materials. Considering users' information-seeking behavior and searching abilities, however, the MR system has many drawbacks for increasing users' ability to retrieve information. This paper analyzes bibliographic records in academic libraries, the LC, and the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) to identify the issues and problems of the MR system. A user survey conducted demonstrates that the MR system is not a user-customized tool based on users' searching ability. Several solutions are suggested to overcome the limitations of the MR system.

Investigation of tenured and tenure-track academic librarians' service satisfaction at public Association of Research Libraries' (ARL) institutions

Service is required for academic faculty life; however, service is less studied than teaching and research. Previous literature shows that service differs based upon faculty rank, gender, race, and discipline. The purpose of this study was to determine whether tenured and tenure-track librarians at public research libraries feel satisfied with their service roles and responsibilities. A service satisfaction questionnaire was emailed directly to 1253 librarians employed at public Association of Research Libraries (ARL) institutions. The authors received 297 survey responses. Follow-up qualitative interviews were conducted with twelve participants to obtain additional depth and clarity of service roles and responsibilities. Quantitative findings indicated that overall service satisfaction varied by gender identity and librarian rank. Due to sample size limitations, future research is needed to evaluate whether service satisfaction also varies by racial and ethnic identity. Qualitative findings indicated participants' understanding of fairness in service is nuanced and that the line between what participants volunteered for versus what tasks they were assigned was complicated.     

音像资料联合编目规则探讨

通过比较研究地方版文献联合采编协作网(CRLNet)几个有代表性成员馆的音像资料编目数据发现,目前国内图书馆的音像资料编目存在各自为政、编目数据大相径庭的现象,其主要原因是没有统一的编目规则。为统一CRLNet音像资料的著录规则,深圳图书馆征求各成员馆的意见并结合音像资料工作实践提出,音像资料的著录可以参见著录电子资源的某些字段,但是主体仍应该遵循录音、录像资料的编目规则。     

北京高校图书馆编目队伍现状调查研究

基于对北京高校图书馆编目工作调查数据的统计,高校图书馆职工总人数有上升趋势,而编目员总人数有下降趋势;编目员高学历比率较高,高职称比率不低,但没有正高职称;编目员老中青三结合、年龄结构合理,但高校图书馆编目队伍中的高水平资深编目员数量并不多.图书馆的编目业务需要更高素质的编目员.

Statistical Survey to Determine Availability of Cataloging Copy on OCLC

This paper reports the results of a year-long survey conducted at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to determine what level of cataloging copy (Library of Congress, member input, or none) is present on OCLC at the time an item is received in Technical Services and after a six-month waiting period. These results were used to divert selected monographs from the normal workflow in order to expedite their cataloging and to release needed shelf space for other items.     

Cataloging Needs Survey for Faculty at the University of Florida

ABSTRACT

In June 1995 the ABEI (Italian Catholic Librarians Association) established a working group in order to create an authority list of Catholic authors (persons and corporate bodies) and of liturgical and religious anonymous works, titled ACOLIT, Autori Cattolici e Opere Liturgiche in Italiano (Catholic Authors and Liturgical Works in Italian). ACOLIT contents: (1) personal authors (particularly of apostolic period and Middle Ages); (2) popes and anti-popes; (3) religious congregations, orders and societies; (4) Catholic Church and Roman Curia; (5) Catholic associations; (6) Bible; (7) liturgical works; (8) religious anonymous works. Headings are established according to the RICA (Regole Italiane di Catalogazione per Autori), but also to the Norme per il catalogo degli stampati by the Vatican Library, the AACR2R, the RAK, the Reglas de catalogaci = F3n. Ed. refundita y rev., and the guidelines and decisions of IFLA. The work group has elaborated original considerations, particularly for the Bible. The group argues the choice and form of the names of popes, Catholic Church and Roman Curia of the RICA and suggests that classical and Medieval writers should be formulated in Italian not in Latin and that the indirect form, surname-name, should be used for saints who have a surname. ACOLIT has accepted the GARE punctuation (Guidelines for authority and reference entries/recommended by the Working Group on an International Authority System; approved by the Standing Committees of the IFLA Section on Cataloguing and the IFLA Section on Information Technology). The print edition is planned for June 1997. ACOLIT will present headings in three sections: (1) Personal writers; (2) Corporate bodies; (3) Bible, Liturgical and religious anonymous works, ABEI will also publish an electronic edition (CD ROM), periodically revised. The research will extend to Christian writers and, in the future, to writers of all religions.     

Main Issues in Cataloging Persian Language Materials in North America

ABSTRACT

The main problems of cataloging Persian language materials as it is practiced in North America are discussed. The problems are grouped by origin: those that originate from the implementation of the ALA-LC Romanization Tables for Persian; those that occur either because of misleading examples used in that Table's rules for application section, or a lack of functional knowledge of Persian; and those that appear in the treatment of names generally and choice and form of main entry specifically, due to the application of inappropriate rules for Persian names. Suggestions for dealing with these cataloging issues are presented.     

Nonprint Formats: A Survey of the Work and Its Challenges for the Cataloger in ARL Academic Libraries

ABSTRACT

Today's emphasis on developing nonprint-format collections in academic libraries mirrors advances in information technology. More new than old, these formats impact not only library planning, policy, and budgets, but also the training and the work of those who select, catalog, process, house, access, and circulate them. Results of this 33-item survey of nonprint catalogers in ARL academic libraries describe their demographic and professional background, their position, staffing for nonprint cataloging and processing, formats collected and bibliographic access provided, training and competency in and responsibilities for cataloging, work organizational and technical challenges, and career aspects.

中部六省共86个地级市图书馆,却只有28个建有网站。文章在全国文化信息资源共享工程建设与中部崛起大潮的背景下,对这28个图书馆网站进行调查分析,找出地级市图书馆网上服务中的亮点与不足,并根据调查的结果提出一些相关的改进意见。

法国档案工作一瞥

法国档案工作有着较为悠久的历史。在菲利浦·奥古斯特统治时期,王国的档案竟在费雷特瓦战役中(1194年7月3日)全部被毁。此后,便采取固定地点存放档案,先是存放在卢浮宫,然后存在圣·夏贝尔。菲利浦·勒贝尔将这批档案整理后转交给当时的审计署长比埃尔·埃坦博。这正是目前法国国家档案馆保存的最古老的档案。
